The Art Gallery of South Australia required a campaign to promote its major exhibition for 2017—titled ‘Versus Rodin’. The exhibition brought the largest collection of Auguste Rodin’s works in the southern hemisphere alongside 60 contemporary artists from around the world. The exhibition highlighted the impact Rodin has had on contemporary art and the way we perceive the human body through space and time.
At its core the exhibition was about collision of the old and the new—and the juxtaposition that comes from curating works that are almost 100 years apart. The solution needed to communicate that the exhibition was about more than just the works of Rodin. To do this, tight crops of Rodin’s sculptures were overlaid with contemporary typography—listing the other artists whose work was to be shown alongside the french sculptor. The technique of listing all the artists effectively expressed the scale this major exhibition.
